Our journey begins at the impressive statue of King Dinis, founder of the world-famous University of Coimbra, one of Europe’s oldest universities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there, we step into the magnificent Courtyard of Schools, surrounded by historic academic buildings, panoramic city views and the ancient Roman gate that once welcomed travelers and empires alike.
We continue to the elegant New Cathedral before descending toward the magnificent Old Cathedral of Coimbra, a remarkably preserved Romanesque masterpiece that feels frozen in medieval times. Along the way, we wander through Coimbra’s charming old town, filled with narrow cobbled streets, hidden corners, local stories and unforgettable atmosphere.
Passing through the historic Almedina Gate and Tower, former guardians of the medieval city walls, we arrive at the lively Commerce Square, once the beating heart of merchants, pilgrims and travelers.
The experience concludes at the beautiful Largo da Portagem, overlooking the shimmering Mondego River and the romantic ruins of the Santa Clara Monastery, forever linked to the legendary Queen Saint Isabel and Coimbra’s most enduring love stories.
This is far more than a simple walking tour. It is an authentic cultural experience, a journey through Portugal’s academic capital and an invitation to truly connect with the history, traditions and spirit of Coimbra.
